How to select the correct Facebook ad type and size?

If you’re just getting started with Facebook advertising, you’re likely to need some help with picking the correct ad dimensions.

After all, there are MANY possible placements…

Placements available in Facebook Ads Manager

After seeing such a wide variety of options, it is easy to get confused…

All the ad options can get confusing – Image source

Also, back in 2018, the go-to Facebook ad size used to be 1200 x 628 pixels. Now, you can publish Facebook posts that 1080 x 1080 pixels wide. This means a lot more real estate in the news feed.

For example, compare these two ads:

The 1080 x 1080px ad looks much larger

However, some Facebook placements still use the 1200 x 628 pixel layout (for example right-hand column ads).

2021 UPDATE! All Facebook ad placements are now eligible for the 1:! format ad sizes, so you don’t need to upload a landscape ad format anymore.

When creating a new Facebook ad campaign, we recommend using Automatic Placements for maximum reach.

Suggested article: 30min DYI Facebook Ad Audit for Non-marketers (and Marketers)

This means that you will need to create ads in at least 3 formats:

  • 1200 x 628 pixels for Facebook Audience network (not needed anymore in 2021!)
  • 1080 x 1080 pixels for Facebook and Instagram news feeds
  • 1080 x 1920 pixels for Facebook and Instagram Stories

Use the Automatic Placements to scale your campaigns’ reach

You can upload the images with different dimensions under a single ad by selecting “Select a placement to customize” when editing your Facebook ads.

Below is an example of the static image ad types we use in a MeetFrank ad campaign. We used the three banner sizes listed above.

Upload 3 Facebook banner formats for a higher reach

What happens if you do not upload some of the special ad sizes?

If you don’t have time or resources to create custom image sizes for Instagram ads, you can also use the 1:1 format ads and Facebook will automatically adjust your creative for the Story placements.

Not adding a custom ad image for the Stories placement can result in slightly less good-looking ads. But you can still run them and get ok results.

Here’s the difference:

The custom ad on the left looks better

To sum this up, you can follow these three best practices:

  • Use as many Facebook ad placements as possible for maximum reach.
  • Upload custom image and video sizes for all the placements you’d like to use.
  • If you don’t have time to create all image sizes, just go with the 1080 xs 1080px ad size.

When publishing Facebook posts, you can also use images 1080 xs 1080 pixels wide.

Alright… Let’s now take a look at the Facebook ad specs for all the available ad types, so that you can create high-performance ad creatives.

News Feed Single Image – Facebook ad size & specs

Facebook Single Image ad is the oldest form of Facebook advertising. It supports a brief write-up, headlines, and a single picture with a link. You can use this ad for all ad objectives apart from those associated with videos.

Source: Taboola

Image specs

  • Recommended Facebook ad image size: The best size for a Facebook ad is at least 1080 x 1080 pixels, but it’s best to use the highest resolution that meets the ratio requirements since there is no maximum resolution.
  • Recommended Facebook ad aspect ratio: 1.91:1 to 1:1. In general, ratios from 1.91:1 to 4:5 are supported. However, if you include a link, launch an Offer ad, or use stock images, you’ll be limited to a ratio of 1.91:1.
  • Minimum Facebook ad dimensions: 600 x 600 pixels.
  • Recommended file types: JPG or PNG.
  • Maximum file size: 30 MB.
  • Aspect ratio tolerance: 3%.

Panorama and 360 photos

For panorama or 360 photos, the aspect ratio should be 2:1. Regardless of the dimension, the photo should be less than 30,000 pixels and the total Facebook image size should be less than 135,000,000 pixels.

Specifically, 360 PNG files can be up to a maximum of 60 MB and JPEG up to a maximum of 45 MB. In addition, the recommended size for 360 photos should be less than 20-30 MB and the recommended format is JPEG. These are the maximum values for both direct Graph API and web uploads.

Facebook ad character limit

  • Primary text: Up to 125 characters will appear on the ad’s preview. However, you are allowed to write longer ad copies. The viewer will see the rest when they click “See More.”
  • Headline: Up to 40 characters.
  • Link description: Up to 30 characters.

Pro Tip: Emojis in ads

An emoji takes up 2 characters, so take that into consideration when adding them to your ad copy 😉

Facebook Feed Ads Sizes

Undoubtedly the most popular advertising position is in the user’s feed. It is, therefore, the most heavily contested. You may find that your competitors are also after precisely the same slot. You can think of it as Main Street social media real estate.

You can opt for either an image ad or a video ad. Facebook has rules both relating to the image/video and the text of your ad.

Note that these are ads in-line with the user’s main feed – not the less common right-column ads that are a separate type.

Facebook Feed Image Ads

Although video is rapidly increasing in popularity, the bulk of Facebook ads still feature a single image. This is unlikely to change as it is clearly much easier to use a photograph than it is to go through the process of creating a video.

Facebook has always made a big issue of text in images. If your image contains more than 20% text, you will receive “reduced delivery” (according to the official Facebook ad specifications).  Note that Facebook ignores the text in the body copy of your ad when it does is 20% calculation.  Facebook offers a tool to ensure that you don’t have too much text in your image.

Note that there are some exceptions to Facebook’s text rule:

  • Book and album covers
  • Product images (showing the whole product – not zooms of logos or text on the packaging)
  • Games
  • Event posters

Be wary of a text-based logo. Any logo that is primarily text is counted as text regardless of its size or alignment. Similarly, watermarks and numbers all count as text for the purpose of these calculations.

The formal sizes and specifications for Facebook Feed Image ads are:

  • Recommended image size: 1200 x 628 (1080 x 1080 for a 1:1 image). No maximum size restrictions
  • Image ratio: 9:16 to 16:9 (no link involved), 1.9:1 to 1:1 (if there is a link)
  • Images no more than 20% text
  • Image file types: .jpg or .png (Note: animated GIFS should be uploaded as a video ad)
  • Text: 125 characters (if there is no link)
  • Headline: 25 characters (any more will appear truncated)
  • Link Description: 30 characters

Facebook Feed Video Ads

Video has grown in popularity over the last few years, so unsurprisingly there has been a large increase in Facebook feed video ads. Note that these are different from Facebook In-Stream Video Ads (which have a 10-second video limit).

Effectively, Facebook Feed Video Ads are the same as Facebook Feed Image Ads, but they use a video in place of a still image.

The formal sizes and specifications for Facebook Feed Video ads are:

  • Recommended to upload the highest-resolution source video available without letter or pillar boxing (no black bars).
  • Minimum dimensions 600 x 315 (1.9:1 landscape) or 600 x 600 (square)
  • Recommended aspect ratio is between 9:16 to 16:9 (Horizontal: 16:9, Square: 1:1, Vertical: 4:5 or 2:3 and Full Portrait: 9:16)
  • Multiple acceptable video formats, but .MP4 or .MOV recommended
  • Max video file size: 4GB
  • Max video length: 240 minutes
  • Video captions and sound: optional but recommended
  • Video thumbnail image no more than 20% text
  • Headline: 25 characters (any more will appear truncated)
  • Link Description: 30 characters

Facebook video ads sizes

When it comes to video, Facebook has one key recommendation to its advertisers: design for mobile first.

Facebook recommends uploading video with square (1:1) or vertical (4:5, 9:16 and 16:9) aspect ratios, to maximize compatibility on both desktop and mobile screens. The platform also recommends keeping videos short (15 seconds or less) and designing videos that work with and without sound (by enabling captions).

For best results, stick to the following specs for video ads:

Facebook feed videos

Minimum width: 120 px
Minimum height: 120 px
Resolution: at least 1080 x 1080 px
Video ratio: 4:5
Video file size: 4GB max

Maximum video length: 241 minutes

For all video ad types, Facebook recommends uploading the “highest resolution source video available without letter or pillar boxing.” Facebook provides an exhaustive list of aspect ratios and features available for each ad type.

Facebook Stories are similar to Instagram Stories—these posts expire after 24 hours, so users can only see them for a limited time. Users scroll through Facebook Stories from the people and pages they follow, and they see advertisements intermittently.

Facebook Stories, or Expandable Carousel, ads have a maximum of three image cards and you can’t use video. Each image can be up to 30 megabytes in size, with a width of 500 pixels. Facebook recommends leaving at least 250 pixels at both the top and the bottom of your image to leave space for calls to action and other in-app text. The image ratio should be 1:1 and resolution at least 1080 by 1080 pixels. You also have 125 characters for primary text.
