,

We go into more detail for every single network below, but this image includes the social media image sizes you probably look up most often.

Instagram image sizes

Instagram supports horizontally and vertically oriented images. It also still supports square images, which was what the platform was known for when it first launched.

This increases your brand’s options. But it also makes image dimensions a little trickier to get right. Follow these guidelines to make sure your images end up looking their best.

Instagram profile picture size: 320 x 320 pixels

Instagram profile photos are displayed at 110 x 100 pixels, but the image files are stored at 320 x 320 pixels, so make sure to upload an image that’s least that big.

Even though the dimensions are in a square format, Instagram profile photos are displayed as a circle. Make sure any elements you want to focus on in the photo are centered so they don’t get cropped out.

Instagram post sizes (feed photos):

  • Landscape: 1080 x 566 pixels
  • Portrait: 1080 x 1350 pixels
  • Square: 1080 x 1080 pixels
  • Supported aspect ratios: Anywhere between 1.91:1 and 4:5
  • Recommended image size: Width of 1080 pixels, height between 566 and 1350 pixels (depending on whether the image is landscape or portrait)

Tips:

  • If you want your images to look their best on Instagram, aim to upload an image that is 1080 pixels wide.
  • When you share an Instagram image that’s sized over 1080 pixels, Instagram will size it down to 1080 pixels.
  • If you share a photo that has a resolution lower than 320 pixels, Instagram will size it up to 320 pixels.
  • If your image is between 320 and 1080 pixels wide, Instagram will keep that photo at its original resolution, “as long as the photo’s aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 4:5 (a height between 566 and 1350 pixels with a width of 1080 pixels).”
  • If your uploaded Instagram image is a different ratio, the platform will automatically crop your photo to fit a supported ratio.

Resource: Learn how to edit Instagram photos like a pro.

Instagram photo thumbnail sizes:

  • Display size: 161 x 161 pixels
  • Recommended upload size: 1080 pixels wide

Tips:

  • Remember that Instagram stores versions of these thumbnails that are as large as 1080 x 1080.
  • To future-proof your Instagram feed and avoid pixelation, upload images that are as large as possible.

Instagram Stories image size: 1080 x 1920 pixels

Tips:

  • This is an aspect ratio of 9:16.
  • Uploading an image with a smaller pixel size (but the same aspect ratio) means the Story will buffer quickly.
  • If you don’t use this ratio, the Story might show with strange cropping, zooming, or leave large sections of the screen blank.
  • Instagram Reels use this same sizing.

Resource: Take your Instagram Stories to the next level with these free templates.

Instagram carousel image sizes:

  • Landscape: 1080 x 566 pixels
  • Portrait: 1080 x 1350 pixels
  • Square: 1080 x 1080 pixels
  • Aspect ratio: landscape (1.91:1), square (1:1), vertical (4:5)
  • Recommended image size: Width of 1080 pixels, height between 566 and 1350 pixels (depending on whether the image is landscape or portrait)

Instagram Reels sizes:

  • 1080 x 1920 pixels
  • This is an aspect ratio of 9:16.
  • Cover photo: 1080 x 1920 pixels
  • Keep in mind that Reels are cropped to a 1:1 image in your profile feed and a 4:5 image in the home feed.

Instagram ads image sizes:

  • Landscape: 1080 x 566 pixels
  • Square: 1080 x 1080 pixels
  • Minimum width: 320 pixels
  • Maximum width: 1080 pixels
  • Supported aspect ratios: Anywhere between 1.91:1 and 4:5

Social Media Image Sizes Per Network

These links will make it easier for you to navigate to the specific social media image sizes per network:

Facebook Image Sizes

With 1.18 billion monthly active users, Facebook is the world’s largest social network. One bad image choice could spell the difference in attracting and engaging with this huge user base and being completely ignored.

One thing to remember when choosing your photos is that there is a difference between how things will display on your personal timeline and how things will display in a user’s newsfeed. Make sure that you are choosing dimensions based on where you want the majority of viewers to see your image.

Learn more about Facebook image sizes

Get specs and tips for implementing the best visual content on Facebook with these guides:

Profile Picture: 180 x 180 (Displays 170 x 170 on Desktop)

Say cheese: this is going to be the photo representing you or your brand on Facebook. This is the square photo that appears on your timeline layered over your cover photo. Your profile picture will also appear when you post to other walls, comment on posts or when your profile is searched.

Image Guidelines

  • Must be at least 180 x 180 pixels.
  • Photo will appear on page as 170 x 170 pixels on desktop and 128 x 128 on smartphones.
  • Profile pictures are located 16 pixels from the left and 176 pixels from the top of your cover photo on desktop.
  • Profile pictures are located 24 pixels from the left, 24 pixels from the bottom and 196 pixels from the top of your cover photo on smartphones.
  • Photo thumbnail will appear throughout Facebook at 32 x 32 pixels.

Business Page Profile Picture: 180 x 180 (Displays 170 x 170 on Desktop)

Facebook recently changed its Profile image for Business Pages to appear to the left side of the screen. The new look helps Facebook Business Pages stand out among personal accounts. However, the dimensions are the same, but the photo appears on the page slightly different.

Image Guidelines

  • Must be at least 180 x 180 pixels.
  • Photo will appear on page as 170 x 170 pixels on desktop, 128 x 128 on smartphones, and 36 x 36 on most feature phones.
  • Photo thumbnail will appear throughout Facebook at 32 x 32 pixels.
  • Business Page images will be cropped to fit a square.

Cover Photo: 820 x 312

Your Facebook cover photo will only appear on your Facebook timeline, but it is a lot bigger than the profile picture, which gives you more freedom to choose something creative. Where your profile picture might be a good choice for a picture of you, or a brand logo, use this space to post something that speaks more toward you as an individual or as a brand.

Image Guidelines

  • Appear on page at 820 x 312 pixels. Anything less will be stretched.
  • Minimum size of 400 x 150 pixels.
  • Displays at 820 x 312 pixels on desktop and 640 x 360 pixels on smartphones.
  • For best results, upload an sRGB JPG file less than 100 KB.
  • Images with a logo or text may be best as a PNG file.
  • Business Page dimensions are exactly the same as personal accounts.

Shared Image: 1200 x 630

A shared image is one of the most common forms of sharing on Facebook. These images will always appear on your timeline, and ideally they will show up in most of your followers’ News Feeds — though with the decrease in organic reach, it’s unlikely that everyone will see your post. The more people engage with your post, the more likely it is that the rest of your followers and their followers will see that activity.

Image Guidelines

  • Recommended upload size of 1200 x 630 pixels.
  • Will appear in feed at a max width of 470 pixels (will scale to a max of 1:1).
  • Will appear on page at a max width of 504 pixels (will scale to a max of 1:1).

Shared Link: 1200 x 628

Another great tool in your Facebook belt is the ability to share a link. It’s very similar to posting a shared image, but it gives you even more fields to work with. You can choose to create a shared link with a small square image to the left and text on the right, or with a larger rectangular image on top with text underneath.

Image Guidelines

  • Recommended upload size of 1200 x 628 pixels.
  • Square Photo: Minimum 154 x 154px in feed.
  • Square Photo: Minimum 116 x 116 on page.
  • Rectangular Photo: Minimum 470 x 246 pixels in feed.
  • Rectangular Photo: Minimum 484 x 252 on page.
  • Facebook will scale photos under the minimum dimensions. For better results, increase image resolution at the same scale as the minimum size.

Event Image: 1920 x 1005 (Recommended)

Facebook Events help capture the attention of users and cut through the noise on Facebook. Reminders are sent to your audience and having a good space with an even better image is important. Make sure you have the right dimensions down for a Facebook Event cover photo.

Image Guidelines

  • Recommended upload size: 1920 x 1005
  • Facebook will scale down to minimum dimensions: 470 × 174.
  • Shows in feed: 470 × 174.

Fundraiser image: 800 x 300 (recommended)

Facebook has added the ability to create a fundraiser for charitable organizations or personal causes. The cover photo for these fundraisers slightly varies from a typical Facebook cover photo, with a minimum size of 400 x 150. The best experience across many display types will come from a higher resolution image, though.

Facebook Image Sizes

Nearly 3 billion people use Facebook regularly, making this platform far and wide the most popular social media network.

This means you really want to ensure your content competes with the noise of other brands publishing graphics on the website, and the best place to start is by understanding the optimal photo sizes.

Facebook Profile Picture Size

While profile photos are round on both Facebook Page and personal profiles, your uploaded photo should be square.

For optimal results, when using an image of your face, make sure your face is centered in the circle and your head isn’t cut off at the forehead or the chin. If using a logo, use a version that will fit nicely in a circle and won’t be cut off.

The best way to check this is by adding an empty circle to your graphic in the editor. Use the circle shape with a colored border and no fill to double-check your placement. Make sure the circle fits snugly in the square.

Recommended image size:

  • While this can be any larger square image size, it appears at 170 x 170 pixels on desktop and 128 x 128 pixels on mobile.

Facebook Cover Photo Size

For profiles and pages, your Facebook cover photo should be 820 x 312 pixels, or any larger 16:9 aspect ratio. These cover photos show up on mobile at 640 x 360 pixels, so make sure your most important information is in that center area.

Here are some considerations when designing Facebook cover images for your social media marketing.

  • Page covers can be a video or slideshow instead of an image.
  • The cover image for personal profiles now has the profile photo at the bottom center.
  • There’s a grey gradient along the bottom edge of Profile and Page cover images
  • Cover Images look wider and taller on desktop than they do on mobile devices.
  • Keep all important content as close to the center as possible, top and bottom are cut off on mobiles and tablets.
  • Groups have a blue band at the bottom of the image.
  • Use PNG if there’s text, graphic elements or logos in your cover image.
  • Always test new graphics before considering them done.

Recommended image size:

  • While this can be any larger 16:9 aspect ratio, it appears at 820 x 312 pixels on desktop and 640 x 360 pixels on mobile.

Facebook Event Cover Photo Size

Event cover photos help provide a visual of what users can expect from your event right off the bat. Whether you share a photo of a previous event or include an event itinerary, this is a great way for marketers to attract attendees.

Be sure your event image is high-quality. The best way to save is as a higher resolution JPG file or PNG file.

Recommended image size:

  • 1200 x 628 pixels

Facebook Group Cover Photo Size

Just like Business Pages, your Facebook group’s cover photo introduces your group at a glance. These are great for drawing in even more members.

Recommended image size:

  • 1640 x 856 pixels

Facebook Post Image Size

When you share a post with an image on Facebook, these should typically be horizontal unless you’re creating a carousel post. Posts that share a photo alongside a link preview vary ever so slightly in size, but you can keep the same concept of your image.

Recommended image size:

  • Photos – 1200 x 630 pixels
  • Links – 1200 x 628 pixels

Facebook Ad Size

Facebook offers a large selection of ad types. Thankfully, with a couple of sizes you’re covered for most of them. Mainly, there are two types of ads, with a link and without a link. Choose the size according to what type of ad you need.

Ads with a link are the most common. These can be horizontal with a 1.91:1 ratio or square at a 1:1 ratio.

Recommended image size:

  • 940 x 788 pixels
  • 1200 x 628 pixels
  • 1200 x 1200 pixels

Facebook Story Size

The Facebook Story has a vertical aspect ratio of 9:16. You can create images and graphics in the correct size for Facebook with Visme easily using one of the hundreds of static and animated templates

Recommended image size:

  • 1080 x 1920 pixels

Facebook social image sizes

Facebook has been becoming more and more visual in character, as well as increasingly geared for mobile. And in 2022, Facebook is still the world’s biggest social media platform, with over 2.9 billion monthly active users. That’s a lot of eyes that might be seeing your content. So the potential is huge here, especially with algorithm changes that favor engagement and sharing.

There’s a number of different image and video types on Facebook from ones in your feed to profile pages. We’ve listed them below:

Facebook profile picture size: 180 x 180px

Most likely, the most-viewed picture you’ll post on the platform – your profile picture – will act as your avatar across the site.

Often the first thing people will see when they come across you, it will appear alongside all of your posts, your comments, and pretty much all of your Facebook activity.

Guidelines

  • Needs a minimum width of 180px
  • Can have a height below 180px, but the image will not be clear
  • Has a 1:1 aspect ratio

Facebook Business Page Profile Picture (180 x 180px)

Facebook used to have different rules for business page’s profile pictures, but not anymore. Now the dimensions are exactly the same as the personal profile picture.

We just wanted to include this section in case you came looking for it.

Guidelines

  • Needs a minimum width of 180px
  • Can have a height below 180px, but the image will not be clear
  • Has a 1:1 aspect ratio

Facebook cover image size: 820 x 312px

Back in my day, we never had cover photos.

Introduced in 2011, Facebook cover photos give you a huge chunk of space at the top of your profile (or page) to stick a photo of your choice (or a video on your page).

This is a great way to add a bit more character to your profile without sacrificing your pretty profile picture.

Guidelines

  • For best results, you can keep the minimum width to 400px and the minimum height to 150px.
  • All of these dimensions apply to page cover photos.
  • If you want to add a cover video to your page, get all the details here.

Facebook shared link image size: 1200 x 630px

This refers to the image Facebook uses when it generates a box from a shared link. Along with the image, you also get the content’s title and description.

Getting the image size right is integral to making your content look good whenever someone shares it on Facebook. Get it wrong and the image can be cropped poorly or stretched out.

You can choose the image Facebook uses by setting up social meta tags. Find out more on that subject here.

Guidelines

  • Consider how the image will fit with your content’s title and description.
  • If one isn’t set, Facebook will try and pull one in from the content.
  • The aspect ratio is 1.9:1.

Facebook shared image size: 1200 x 630px

That’s the best recommendation for making an image look good and be sure it won’t get distorted, but there can be some leeway.

Taller and shorter pictures are often seen on Facebook, so while 1200px is a good rule to stick to, you can push the height a bit as detailed below:

Guidelines

  • Maximum height of images is 1800px before they are cropped.
  • Recommended aspect ratio is 3:2.
  • Facebook will auto-crop or resize when you go over limits, so always test your image.

Facebook event cover image size: 1920 x 1080px

It wasn’t just the profile pages that got the cover image treatment. Events also let you put a massive picture up to encourage people to attend your amazing gig, play, or whatever else.

There’s also the option to include video here, perfect for really getting across the “Devonshire Cheesefest 2018” vibes. You can get full details on getting videos right here.

Guidelines

  • Minimum width is 400x
  • Minimum height is 150px
  • Aspect ratio is 16:9

Other Facebook image and video sizes:

  • Facebook group cover image size: 1640 x 856px
  • Facebook video size: 1280 x 720px
  • Maximum Facebook video length: 240 minutes
  • Facebook image ad size: 1200 x 628px
  • Facebook video ad size: 1080 x 1350px (ratio 4:5), at least 1080 x 1080px, ratios from 16:9 to 9:16 are also supported
  • Facebook Story ad size: 1080 x 1920px
  • Facebook Messenger image ad size: 1200 x 628px
  • Facebook Reels: 1080×1350px (ratio of 4:5)

  • The attention span of the audience is extremely short on social media, so try to keep Facebook videos as short as possible. While the maximum video length is 240 minutes, Facebook recommends keeping them as short as 15 seconds.
  • Facebook is still a ‘social’ network at heart, so professional users are advised to avoid going too commercial or product-driven with imagery. Instead, aim to convey the human side of your brand – and, as with all the networks here, use the best resolution possible and shoot for the optimal Facebook post dimensions.

The best social media post size

Posting on more than one of the social networks? Don’t drive yourself crazy – use these sizes that work across multiple social media platforms.

Best size for image posts

1200 pixels square is ideal for Facebook and Instagram posts. It also works well for Pinterest and LinkedIn posts – and can work for Twitter, if you keep any type or other critical elements away from the top and bottom of the image.

A reader has noted that LinkedIn sends out square images in emails, so this template will help you optimize LinkedIn image posts across mobile (horizontal), desktop and email (square).

A square is a 1:1 aspect ratio.

Feel free to download this handy template! Then you can plan how your square images will crop on Twitter and LinkedIn.

Just right-click to save.

If Pinterest is your main platform, try the optimal 2:3 Pin images on Facebook, as they work there too. In fact, I love the impact these taller images have on Facebook.

You can control how these tall images are cropped to 4:5 for the Instagram feed, but it’s center cropped to square for your IG gallery.

Here’s the handy template for tall social media posts that are optimized for Pinterest Pins. Right-click to save to your hard drive.

Best image size for link share posts

Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn all recommend 1.91:1 aspect ratio image. Twitter calls out 1200 x 628 pixels, and LinkedIn says 1200 x 627.

Facebook is now saying 1200 x 630, but those 2 or 3 pixels won’t hurt either way. Maybe they’re just trying to round up!

Google Discover recommends minimum 1200 pixel wide images, so this size is a must for all web pages and blog posts you want shared on social.

Facebook Cover Photo sizes

There’s a profusion (or confusion) of FB cover photos. Click through to the in-depth articles for details and free templates.

➔ Facebook Page: 820 x 312 pixels on desktop / 640 x 360 mobile | Optimize your Facebook Page cover photo size for both desktop and mobile!

➔ Facebook Group: 1640 x 856 pixels minimum | Optimize your Facebook Group cover photo size for desktop and mobile.

➔ Facebook Event: 1200 x 628 pixels | Optimize your Facebook Event cover photo size for desktop and mobile.

➔ Facebook Profile: 851 x 315 pixels | Optimize your Facebook Profile cover photo size for desktop and mobile.

Want one size for all Facebook cover photos? Use 16:9 proportion and allow for cropping.

This size works perfectly on mobile Pages. You must allow cropping top and bottom on desktop, so don’t place text or other critical elements near the top and bottom.

This proportion works out to: 1200 x 675, 1640 x 923, or 1920 x 1080 pixels. Your choice!

I always recommend going with a larger image for best quality. While FB sometimes specifies minimum sizes required for upload, modern displays have such great resolution that low quality images don’t cut it any more. Go BIG!

And, it must be a static image. There’s no longer an option to use a video as your cover photo.

Facebook Image Sizes

Facebook presumably provides more different visual possibilities than any other social media channel. Hence, it can be tricky to make sure that you are designing your graphic elements properly.

In addition to timeline photos, you will likely need to develop cover images, profile images, and videos. You may even be required to create stories and reels.

Facebook is a unique social platform because it features different types of media for which you may need to design assets properly. Here are Facebook’s current image and video size dimensions:

Facebook Profile Photo Image Size: 170 x 170 Pixels (Desktop)

A Facebook profile picture is displayed at 170 x 170 pixels on a desktop. On smartphones, it displays 128 x 128 pixels.

Facebook Cover Photo Image Size: 820 x 315 Pixels

The recommended image size for Facebook cover photos is 820 x 315 pixels for desktop & 640 x 360 pixels on smartphones. The ideal file size should be less than 100 KB. To avoid any compression, you should upload a PNG file.

Facebook Stories Image Size: 1080 x 1920 Pixels

The recommended image size for Facebook stories is 1080 x 1920 pixels, with an aspect ratio of 9:16. Also, leave 14% (or 250 px) of the top and bottom text-free since your brand’s profile photo will cover it.

Facebook Ads Image Size: 1080 x 1920 Pixels

The recommended image size for Facebook ads is at least 1080 x 1080 pixels with an aspect ratio of 1.91:1 to 1:1. It supports ratios from 1.91:1 to 4:5. If you include a link, use stock images, or launch an Offer ad, you will be limited to a ratio of 1.91:1.

Facebook Image Sizes Cheat Sheet

  • Facebook Cover image: 850 x 315 px | maximum 100 KB
  • Facebook Profile image: 170 x 170 px (desktop), 128 x 128 px (smartphones)
  • Facebook Shared image: 1200 x 630 px
  • Facebook Highlighted image: 1200 x 717 px
  • Facebook Event image: 1920 x 1080 px
  • Facebook Stories: 1080 x 1920 px
  • Facebook Link image: 1200 x 630 px
  • Facebook Video: 1280 x 720 px
  • Maximum Facebook video length: 240 minutes
  • Facebook Ad: 1200 x 628 px
  • Facebook Video ad: 1080 x 1350 px (ratio 4:5), 1080 x 1080 px (at least), supported ratios are from 16:9 to 9:16
  • Facebook Story ad: 1200 x 628 px
  • Facebook Group cover image: 1640 x 856 px (or 1.91:1 ratio)
  • Facebook Messenger image ad: 1200 x 628 px
  • Supported image file types: PNG, JPG, or GIF
  • Facebook Reels: 1080 × 1350 px (ratio 4:5)

Facebook post image size

The Facebook recommended image size for sharing images and sharing links with an image is 1,200 x 630 pixels.

Whether you’re sharing landscape, portrait, or square images, Facebook will resize it to 500 pixels wide and scale the height accordingly.  The good news here is that you don’t have to worry about your image size when sharing images on Facebook.  Almost all images will look great on your audience’s News Feed—we say almost because Facebook still requires an aspect ratio between 9:16 to 16:9.

Fetch Eyewear uses both portrait and landscape photos on its Facebook page.

When you share a link to Facebook, Facebook will show an image in the link preview. Facebook looks at the Open Graph tags for the link, specifically the og:image tag, which specifies the image that Facebook should use when sharing in the News Feed.

You can add the og:image tag manually into the <head> section on every page of your website, or you can try out aplugin like Yoast SEO for WordPress, which handles the code and implementation for you. Here at Buffer, we’re big fans of Yoast.

For a carousel post, each image is cropped to fit a 300 x 300-pixel square.

Facebook Story image size

Because Facebook Stories take up the entire mobile screen, the recommended Facebook Story image size is 1,080 x 1,920 pixels. Your profile photo and some buttons will appear at the top of your Stories, so be sure to keep that in mind when designing your images.

The Body Coach centers text so it’s not covered up by the profile photo or buttons.

Best image sizes for Instagram

  • Square images: 1,080 x 1,080 pixels
  • Horizontal (landscape) images: 1,080 x 566 pixels
  • Vertical (portrait) images: 1,080 x 1,350 pixels
  • Instagram Stories: 1,080 x 1,920 pixels

Instagram feed image size

All Instagram posts have the same width (1,080 pixels), which is the size of your phone screen. If your image is less than 320 pixels wide, Instagram will enlarge it, and it might look pixelated. We provide tips for when (and why) to use each image size in the Instagram image size guide linked above.

Instagram Stories image size

Since Instagram Stories take up the full phone screen, the ideal size is 1,080 pixels wide x 1,920 pixels tall (aspect ratio of 9:16).

West of Kerchief Co and Toucan Rescue Ranch make full use of the screen in Instagram Stories. Both accounts keep logos and text away from the top and bottom of the screen where profile photos and buttons could obscure the content.

When designing your Instagram Stories, remember to keep the 250 pixels of the top and bottom of the image free of text and logos because that’s where your profile photo and Instagram buttons will be.

To make creating great Instagram Stories super easy for you, we built Stories Creator. Every Stories image you create with the tool is perfectly sized for Instagram Stories. We even show you the Instagram interface while you’re designing so that you can see where your profile photo and the Instagram buttons are. Give it a go!
