plants vs zombies, 2022-07-23, What Killed the Plants vs Zombies Franchise?, Plants vs Zombies is one of the most iconic games of the late 2000s, but nowadays it seems to have been largely forgotten to be the titan it once was. In this video, I plan on answering the question as to what choice(s) led to the situation we’re in today.

History[edit]
Main series[edit]
On April 1, 2009, PopCap released a music video for the song “Zombies on Your Lawn” to promote Plants vs. Zombies.[1] A PopCap spokesperson, Garth Chouteau, revealed in an IGN interview that Plants vs. Zombies would be released soon on PC and Mac.[2] On April 22, 2009, PopCap released an official game trailer of Plants vs. Zombies on YouTube.[3][4] During the promotion of Plants vs. Zombies, PopCap released a demo version of the game that could be played for thirty minutes.[5] Plants vs. Zombies was officially released on May 5, 2009, for PC and Mac.[6]
PopCap Games and its assets were bought by EA on July 12, 2011, for 750 million US dollars.[7] Fifty employees were laid off in the Seattle studio of PopCap Games on August 21, 2012, to mark a switch of focus to mobile and social gaming.[8]
On August 20, 2012, PopCap announced that they were working on a sequel to Plants vs. Zombies.[9] Its release date would be set at late spring of 2013.[10] However, the game’s status was in doubt shortly after the announcement when the company went through a period of layoffs.[8]
In May 2013, PopCap Games released a trailer revealing a sequel to the first game, titled Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time.[11][12] The game was soft-launched for the iOS in Australia and New Zealand on July 10, 2013,[13] and was officially released on August 14, 2013, as a freemium title.[14] The game featured new locations and plants along with the addition of plant food, a power-up that can be used to enhance a plant for a short period and can either be bought using in-game currency or acquired by defeating zombies that are glowing green.[15]
In July 2019, EA announced Plants vs. Zombies 3, another free-to-play mobile title in the series. It was launched in a pre-alpha state for Android in July 2019.[16][17] The game soft-launched in February 2020 in the Philippines, Romania, and Ireland.[18] It was then made unavailable in October 2020, becoming unplayable in November 2020. EA has plans to release an improved version of the game in the future.[19] On September 7, 2021, Plants vs. Zombies 3 was soft launched again with substantial changes, such as two-dimensional graphics and the return of the Sunflower as a plantable plant, having the same purpose in the previous iterations.[20]
Spin-offs[edit]
A spin-off called Plants vs. Zombies Adventures was announced in March 2013[21] and was released on May 20, 2013 on Facebook. The game added new locations and new plants. It also had a gameplay feature in which the player had a limited amount of plants and had to grow more plants at an in-game farm.[22] In July 2014, it was announced that Plants vs. Zombies Adventures would close on October 12, 2014.[23]
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare was announced at E3 2013 as a multiplayer third-person shooter game made for PC and consoles.[24][25] Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare was released on February 25, 2014, in North America and on February 27, 2014, in Europe.[26] A sequel, Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2, was teased in June 2015 and was officially announced at E3 2015.[27][28] The game was released on February 23, 2016.[29] On March 10, 2016, PopCap announced Plants vs. Zombies Heroes, a digital collectible card game in the style of tower defense. It was soft released to certain countries on the same day,[30] and was fully released internationally on October 18, 2016.[31]
In August 2019, a closed beta of a sequel to Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 codenamed “Picnic” was made available to select players through invites.[32] On September 4, 2019, EA announced the sequel’s title; Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville. It was released in an early access state that same date. The game was fully released on October 18, 2019.[33][34]

Editors’ Notes
Years ago, Plants vs. Zombies defined a genre with its fresh concept, undeniable charm, and innovative, balanced gameplay. Now the undead have risen again, bringing with them new time-traveling tales and a massive slew of new zombies and plants. Whether you stomp enemies without paying a dime or buy new experimental plants and power-ups with In-App Purchases, the result is the same: an incredible sequel that’s fresh and fun throughout, reminding us why we fell in love with this world in the first place.
5 Star But: Awesome In (Almost) All Ways…
I love this game and I’ve been playing it for a number of years. Changes over the years with the inclusion of Arena competitions that change every few days and daily challenges, along with the continuous addition of new plants helps to keep things fresh, fun and engaging. I rarely leave reviews anywhere, but a relatively recent glitch has me writing one now. It has to do with playing Arena challenges. Every so often (but often enough that this is really becoming an issue), right in the middle of the game, the app just shuts down and kicks me off of the platform. And what ends up happening then is I lose the gauntlet required to play that game, and also the satisfaction of knowing whether or not I was actually going to win or not. This isn’t a huge issue overall, but it does mean I end up forfeiting a gauntlet when I may not have actually lost, and I also then don’t receive whatever prize I would have received for that game’s win. And as there’s no way to recoup that particular game or gauntlet, it just kind of feels like a rip off, tiny though it is. Over time, those small rip offs add up, you know? And the overall effect is….irritating, to say the least. I wish the developers would address this bug. I’m sure enough money is being made by them without having to nickel and dime loyal players here and there. Then this game would have my full-throated endorsement of a true 5 star game without the caveat in the title.
Amazing game, but..
I love this game. It is super entertaining and I’m kind of addicted. But.. there has been a little bit of problems. 1. Whenever you update the game and add a plant, there is a load data part that takes 10 minutes, which can result in devices overheating and losing battery. 2nd. The game has too much adds, can you make it every 5 levels you get one add? And lastly, the game doesn’t get any new maps added in it. This is making me sad because I wanted plants like scarcely shroom and umbrella leaf to return. But alas, the game is very fun. Also, why is Chomper a premium plant that costs money, but torch wood and hot date are not? That’s kind of weird. Also, can you make snow pea a non- premium? I would say you could put it in the castle map. Also, Star fruit should cost gems, and squash should be buffed. Also, why is laser beam doing more damage than bloomerang when 1. Laser beam can hit every zombie in the game, but bloomerang cant hit the jester or shovel zombie. 2. Laser beam can hit every zombie in one lane, and bloomerang can’t. 3. Laser beam shoots faster than bloomerang. And 4. Laser beam only costs 200 sun for what it does? Why doesn’t bloomerand cost 150, and why doesn’t lazar beam cost 250? Also, Why does tile turnip go all the way up to 10K when I don’t even have it up to one lane yet? And a suggestion: can you make Twin sunflower 100 sun?
